Sports betting is not yet legal in Connecticut, but it could be in the near future. In 2017, lawmakers in Connecticut passed a gambling package that did not legalize sports betting in the state, but it did set. No, neither state-regulated nor offshore sports betting is legal in Connecticut either online or through brick and mortar destinations. It is not legal to own or operate any type of sports betting business.

Currently, the state of Connecticut does not offer legalized sports betting, despite the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) being overturned on May 14, 2018, allowing each state in the country to propose and create their own laws and regulations for sports betting.

However, gambling does exist in the state at Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods, two tribal casinos. An additional casino license has been approved for a third to be built and operated by the two tribes who run those casinos as well.

Luckily if you’re looking to bet on sports in Connecticut you don’t have to travel too far to place a bet. Both New York State and Rhode Island neighbor the Constitution State and have some form of legalized sports wagering. Additionally, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New Hampshire are also within a reasonable radius of Connecticut and offers sports betting themselves.

For now, even online wagering with sites like DraftKings and FanDuel are still pending legislature to make them legal, so Connecticuters will have to wait a little bit longer to legally bet on sports.

When Will Online Sports Betting Be Legal in Connecticut?

Lawmakers have been trying to push forward legalized sports betting in Connecticut, but have faced resistance from the local tribes.

Bills were introduced in both 2019 and 2020 which would’ve allowed for online and in-person legalized betting in the state, but tribes have argued that they should have the exclusive rights to offer such wagering. However, tribal casinos have been eager to reopen during the pandemic and are interested in the prospect of being able to offer sports betting to increase their revenue.

Some positive news in the efforts to legalize sports betting in Connecticut comes from the nomination of Rob Simmelkjaer by Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont to head the Connecticut Lottery Board. Simmelkjaer has past experience as a journalist at ESPN, NBC Sports, and ABC News and started his own media platform called Persona Media. His involvement will surely help to work towards a path that could see legalized sports betting in Connecticut.

Considering Connecticut has the highest per capita income of any state in the US, the Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods properties are massive and could (and would happily) welcome the addition of sports betting, plus the fact that almost all of Connecticut’s nearby states are offering sports betting, the question is just a matter of “when” and not “if” legalized sports betting will arrive in Connecticut.
