About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
- Students are welcomed to the department, orientated and introduced to staff.
- PANDA stands for Paediatric Assessment and Decision Area.
- Students will receive an orientation booklet.
- Students individual learning needs will be identified and learning opportunities planned.
- The department consists of a 4 seated minor injury bay. a 4 bedded assessment area and an 8 bedded observation area. Children can be cared for on the unit for up to 23 hours and 59 minutes before discharge or transfer to another hospital.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Students are allocated a mentor and an associate mentor, prior to commencement of the placement.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Shift Notes:
Ideally students will work the same shifts as their mentor/associate mentor. Night shifts may be undertaken if desired to broaden the students experience of PANDA.
There is always a community nurse working on the late shift.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
- The PANDA unit cares for children from birth to fifteen years with a range of minor to life threatening illnesses and injuries.
- The aim of the unit is to care for children close to home and prevent transfers and admissions to other hospitals.
- The unit works closely with the Childrens Community Nursing team, many of the children seen in the department are discharged home and their care continued in the community.

- Assess, plan and implement and evaluate cares for children with a variety of conditions.

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
- The observation of wound suturing, venepuncture and cannulation.
- Students are also able to observe and under supervision assist in basic life support and performing ECGs and cardiac monitoring.
- Care of patients including acute onset of illness.
- Injury including head injuries, allergic reactions and respiratory problems.
